WOMEN LEADING THE WAY
Lu Anne Gafford
Best Practice Membership Chair
Where are you from? Ankeny—originally from Albert City in NW, Iowa.
Occupation: I am a professionally certified thinking partner to walk alongside women who are transitioning to their next phase in life (new career, empty nester, retirement, loss of a loved one, etc.), OR women who know they want more in life but can’t land on what that looks like OR women who are stuck in guilt, shame, people–pleasing and want to love themselves more. I am retired from full–time teaching at Des Moines Area Community College. I have a law degree from Drake.
Family: I am married to Jeff Mitchell; we have two daughters, Lisa and Jessica. I became a mom to Lisa when Jeff and I married. Lisa has two children and a grandchild. That makes me a great–grandmother.
We adopted Jessica from South Korea. She was married in 2020 and is 28 years old. We are great friends.
We have a black lab, Coco Chanel.
Other Interests: I love nature and traveling. I like to bike on the bike trails around Des Moines. In the past, we have pulled our camper all around the U.S. I have been blessed to travel all over the U.S. and many international countries.
We’d love to hear from you! Fill out the contact form or reach out to Susan Dunn at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Empowering Women through Educational Scholarships
Today’s scholarship recipients are tomorrow’s leaders. ABWA members have provided opportunities for women to achieve their personal and professional best by championing educational opportunities through the Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Fund (SBMEF). Since 1953, SBMEF has awarded almost 18 million dollars in scholarships to more than 17,000 women. To learn more about available scholarships, go to sbmef.org.
